Google Account

You just need to create a Google account to start. If you already have a Google Account, you just have to login to webmaster tools.

Add your site

Once you have successfully logged in, you will be able to access the main page. You need to follow the steps:

  • By clicking on the “Add a Site” button, you can add your website address.
  • Type the direction in the box and click “Continue”.
  • On the homepage, you can see an option to “add a site”.
  • This link will bring up a site submission box.
  • Enter the domain of your site, preferably in www version.

Owner Verification

Since you are done adding your website to Webmaster Tool. The next step you need to do is verify your identity. You have to verify your account so that you can track the activities of your website. The major aim of this step is to stop unauthorized people from getting access to your site.
After you add your website on GWT, you will have to verify that you actually own the site. You can do this in 4 different ways:

Domain’s configuration – Add a (Domain Name System) DNS record to your domain configuration. This method can be used if you know your domain name provider. You can choose it from the drop-down menu. Once you have chosen, verify your selection.

Add a meta tag – If you can edit your website HTML, you can use this option. It is the easiest option to verify your ownership. You just need to copy a given sample HTML code and paste it in your header or footer file

Upload an HTML file to your server – This method is a bit tricky. If you know how to upload a file, then go for this option. Google Webmasters will give you a file which you need to download. You need to upload the file to the root directory of your website. After successfully upload the file, you need to verify the upload.

Link your Google Analytics – It will help you keep a track of your audience likes and dislikes. If your site already has a Google Analytics tracking code, you can use this option. But you need to be the administrator of your Google Analytics account.


Once you are done with the verification process, you will see a dashboard on the left side of Webmaster screen. You can find an extensive list of features in your dashboard. Once you are done with above process, you can see data on your homepage. It might take few hours but you can start with your webmaster tools.
The Dashboard will give a glimpse of every feature and setting. Webmaster tool will give detailed information about your user’s behavior. Follow are the features:

  • It will show you how many pages Google has indexed.
  • A number of links from other sources.

Site Configuration

Configuring your website will help search engines will help to rank your website. There are few terms you need to know:

Sitemaps – Submitting a sitemap will help Google determines the pages and contents of your website. With the help of Sitemaps Google can index your site. If you don’t submit a sitemap they may not index all the web pages and you won’t get much traffic! Sitemaps have to be submitted in an XML format. It should contain not more than 50,000 URLs. If you have larger file size, then you can split them and submit the files individually.

Crawlers – There are some pages on your website which you don’t want Google to index. Like private login, RSS feeds and other important personal data. A robots.txt file can block Google and other search engines to access or index pages without your permission.

Sitelinks – This section helps you to control the content shows up when someone searches for your site. Sitelinks are links to a site’s interior pages. Google generates these links automatically. You can remove the site links whenever you want.


Search Queries – By keeping a check on search queries page, you can work on improving your click-through rate (CTR). Your title description and metadata should be attractive so that people find it interesting. Even the content of your website should be unique and genuine.

Keywords – Under Keywords section, you can see which keywords from your website are more relevant. You can also see different variations of each keyword relevant to your website. If you want to improve your keyword ranking, you can analyze the relevant keywords and adjust the data to enhance the contents of your website!

Internal Linking – Linking your web pages together is good for your website SEO. Internal links will help improve your PageRank and Page Views. In addition to that, you can analyze which pages are most popular.

Crawl Stats – you have thousands of web pages on your site, then Google will crawl these pages on a daily or weekly basis. If you can’t get any stats, it means something is wrong!
